Light and Health - how light can affect our wellbeing
How the right light can make a real difference.
One of the things we think about a lot at Mesh is how technology can - and should - help to make you happier and healthier. Silly as that might sound (an awful lot of tech is a luxury, after all), it’s worth bearing this in mind.
Superficially, and especially given what we’ve all been through this past year with the pandemic, we’ve seen quite clearly that making it easy to lose yourself in a film or your favourite piece of music can really help when you’re stuck at home.
Beyond that, though, what recent developments have shown is how technology can help us lead healthier lives by improving our environment. One of the most significant insights is into light. That ‘blue light from mobile screens’ thing you’ve read about - the one where too much blue light causes elevated stress, headaches and ruins natural circadian (sleep) rhythms - isn’t limited only to devices you spend hours staring at; it’s also part of the light spectrum emitted by all light bulbs.
Recent research into how different light wavelengths (i.e. colours) affect our brains has given us a better understanding of which light colours to use more of in our homes, and which ones to minimise.
In a lovely home-grown UK story, one of the companies at the forefront of this is Ray Lighting (https://ray.lighting/), a company started a couple of years ago by people we’ve known in the lighting industry for a long time. They’ve developed cost-effective light fittings that emit a much healthier spectrum of light colours (note: it’s still a ‘white’ light) that’s designed to reduce those side effects people suffer from when exposed to artificial LED light for long periods of time.
Couple that with our lighting controls and window treatments to make it easy for you to get the right light - natural daylight, or artificial light - at the right time, and we can elevate your time spent at home to one of enjoyment and relaxation, whether you’ve just come home or spent the whole day there ‘at work’.
